Seeking truth? Feeling alone and overwhelmed?

Gather with Christians who care.

CTF Horizontal Luncheon

Are you considering leaving hyper fundamentalism or a high-control church? Are you disentangling faith after doing so? You’re not alone!

You see the problems—Scripture out of context, spiritual abuse, fear tactics—but the thought of leaving the only church group you know (including good people you love) is overwhelming, maybe terrifying. Like us, you’ve probably heard the narrative, “If you leave our group, God will leave you!”

Moving to another church could mean losing your friends, community, support system, reputation, ministry, identity… possibly more. It’s a daunting risk, especially if you don’t know where you’d go next and don’t have friends in healthy churches.

We want to connect you with Bible-believing Christians across denominations who are rooting for you! At the Called to Freedom luncheon, you will meet believers who want to understand where you’re coming from and support you in any way they can. We hope this experience will leave you encouraged, strengthened in faith, and with a few more friends than you came with!

About the Luncheon

The Called to Freedom luncheon is the first and only event we’re aware of designed to connect you—those who are leaving/have left hyper fundamentalism for Christ—with supportive believers in healthy churches. But your attendance won’t only benefit you!

Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Arkansas have over 1,000 hyper-fundamentalist churches at the minimum (likely many more!). Unfortunately, they are so isolated that there is little awareness to their teachings and the need to support former members as they rebuild. By simply attending, you are changing that.

Join us in praying that local church leaders and congregants who come will be moved to support those who are leaving cultish groups. This will result in long-term impact in the Four State area and beyond!

About the Hosts

Berean Holiness is a nonprofit organization on the mission of guiding believers out of fear and shame and into the gospel of grace. Our goal is to build a bridge of free, faith-based resources (primarily educational content and community support) that lead out of hyper fundamentalism and into healthy faith and faithful churches. We accomplish this through long-form articles, videos, podcasts, social media posts, one-on-one support, community groups (via Zoom), and in-person events.

In under two years, 43 people have told us that Berean Holiness was influential in their salvation/return to faith, 46 said Berean Holiness was influential in their return to church attendance, and over 400 said Berean Holiness helped them to understand the gospel. We’re so grateful to get to be part of what God’s doing!

From Called to Freedom Conference Attendees…

“The first thing Natalie encouraged us with that ‘You were told that when you left your group, God would leave you. But that’s not true, God is with you.’ I felt so understood in my experience and also encouraged to pursue Christ with renewed hope. Thank you for the intentionality and care I could feel in every aspect of the conference.” – Hannah M.

“The body of Christ is bigger than I ever imagined! Healing began for me this week & I know I am not alone this journey.” – Cory

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”

— Galatians 5:13 —

What’s the Difference between Hyper Fundamentalism and Healthy Churches?

In a healthy church, believers unite around essential doctrines, while giving grace in matters of lesser importance. While denominations may form around secondary doctrines (especially practical ones that affect services), there is still collaboration and fellowship across denominational lines. Within each church, individuals differences are expected, accepted, and respected on tertiary doctrines, and especially in matters of Christian liberty.

In contrast, hyper fundamentalism arises when decisions that Scripture leaves to individual believers (matters of Christian liberty) are turned into salvation issues. For example, if a woman wears pants, she is “living in an abomination” and assumed to be lost. These extra-biblical rules (and other uncommon, false teachings) result in isolation and division from the rest of the Body of Christ, leaving members vulnerable to authoritarian leaders.

Leaving a healthy church may bring temporary sadness, but you will still be loved as an equal in Christ and friendships can continue. On the other hand, leaving hyper fundamentalism is viewed as betrayal and backsliding. Being intentionally cut off from friendship and fellowship is the norm.

In hyper fundamentalism, salvation is portrayed as fragile and uncertain. Fear of “missing heaven by an inch,” keeps members willing to follow restrictions they can’t find in Scripture and afraid to leave their group (as if the group can get them to heaven). In a healthy church, assurance of salvation rests in Jesus Christ alone.

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

“The Called to Freedom conference has been the most spiritually uplifting fellowship I’ve ever experienced. I was able to be real and develop relationships in a safe place where I didn’t have to be false. I commit to doing what ever I can to help this happen again.’ – Tim
